"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There is only one problem: The sender also wants to be the Haims' newest recruit. Furthermore, we are not alone. Multiple famous admirers have openly petitioned for the honor.

The evidence suggests a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos often show them marching in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such pure joy you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to start a band."

"So everyone is invited to be the honorary member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The group are connecting from a break, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination isn't lost on the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "However we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The record emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The lyrics follow endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to actively work on blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Sound

That developed resilience demanded a fresh approach – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The band's openness inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Future

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an worldwide following.

But the sister act will consistently be their top commitment.

"We have been making music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still making music."
