2K Brings Onboard Apex Legends Producer to Revitalize Challenged Action Game Project Ethos
2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Shift Follows Poor Reception
The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this decision through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a more defined game identity.
Ismailer stated that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a revised focus, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
Trend of Strategic Hires
The news follows a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the complete content from the president's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just completed your town hall - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative creators we have had the chance to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to persist.”
With your dedication and versatility, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s the game playtest was revealing. It affirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the requirement for a more distinct brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to mind and overhauled the title with a revitalized direction - one that’s poised to fulfill its potential to our audience.
The belief in this project strengthens every day. To further the outstanding progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the incoming Studio Head of the team. Following several months of conversations, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s guidance and background in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having dedicated the last 15 years creating and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in receiving him soon. We are all excited to keep seeing the progress of the game in the months to follow.
David
Experience of the Incoming Leader
The appointee currently serves in the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Vision
The upcoming game was revealed in last year alongside a public demo. Then, the developers described the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch explains. "Challenge the opponents with fresh skills, challenges, and challenges that evolve every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Or take a risk, put it on the line, and hope your group can achieve the highest spot? The option is yours."
The game lacks an official release date or supported systems, but fans can expect more updates as creation advances.
